The hypocaust heating system was found only in the most luxurious homes in Wayfare, but to keep it working smoothly and unobtrusively, it needed to be accessible for maintenance without the floors being torn up.

Checking to make sure no one was near, I opened the access panel in the wall behind the servant’s stairs, and slid in, closing the door behind me. Fortunately, it was summer, and so the heating was not used during the day, otherwise the narrow space within would be uncomfortably hot and choked with smoke. Moving as fast as I could without making any noise, I made my way through the walls to the guest room I’d just left. Pressing my ear to the wall, I could hear the conversation continuing. Hopefully I hadn’t missed much.

“It is not a direct disobedience of the Warlord’s order,” Carl the Gray was saying. “Merely an interpretation of that order, which will lead to the same end.”

“I see.” Argent sounded less convinced.

“The important thing is that the last Takra is out of the way,” Carl the Gray went on smoothly, “how that is achieved is of lesser importance. Warlord Bek would simply have her killed. Securing her for Seligar will likewise put her out of harm’s way.”

“I understand.” Argent was clearly coming around. “And she was in the First Land, all this time?”

“It would seem so.”

“Remarkable.”

“The Takra sent an Elf to watch over her. If given the chance, I am certain this same Elf will smuggle the woman back to the First Land as soon as possible. We have to hope our bait will prove effective.”

“On the subject of the First Land,” Argent went on. “A curious report reached me of a man washed up on a beach to the south. He entered into a fight with some of our soldiers over a young Feline (one of the Pride). Would have gotten himself killed if an adult Feline hadn’t turned up—you know what vicious bastards those creatures can be. I thought it odd that any human would defend a Feline at risk of his own life, so I had one of the soldiers sent for. The way in which the soldier described the man was… of interest. Specifically, the man’s clothes sounded very odd, indeed, as did his whole attitude. He used phrases the soldiers did not recognize. He might be from Farside...”

“You think he might have come through from the First Land?” the Imperium mused.

“It crossed my mind. You know more about such things than I do. What are your thoughts?”

“I think I chose well when the post of Trader-in-Chief came up.” I could just imagine Argent preening at such flattery from the Imperium. “And I believe you may be correct about this man. Get a description and post it to all Bek troops in the area. Tell them he may be travelling with lions.”

“Yes, Imperium.”

“People do not come through from the First Land for no reason.” Carl the Gray’s voice had taken on a faraway quality once more.
